Tour operator cancelled the all day Provence Lavender field tour which created a big disappointment. Viking arranged basically a taxi to take us but it was not that good of a substitute.

We spent most of our time in the Avignon port since the lock & dam was closed above Avignon and below Lyon preventing us from most of our scheduled spots. Our dock was right by the Pope's Palace and an easy walk across the street to the entrance to the gated medieval city. Very disappointing! the famous pont is only a demi pont (and you have to pay 7 euros to walk on it). Perhaps due to not very good guide, who only seemed to want to show us the souvenir shops, but something of a let down. ...
I had always wanted to visit Avignon with its rich history, especially relating to the time of the two popes. Our guide was knowledgeable and easy to understand. We did not go inside the Palais de les Popes which was a pity but there was lots to see so probably no time for a visit.
