The famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is the most popular trek in South America, done by 500 trekkers every day. You can do the classical 4-day route as well a 2-day hike. Salcantay is the most popular alternative hiking route to Machu Picchu and does not require a permission. Every day many, large groups start. One stretch runs close to the snow-capped Salcantay mountain. Lares is a walking area visited by much less trekkers. The mountain scenery is beautiful, and in the area, people live a very traditional rural lifestyle. Choquequirao is an impressive Inca city. The treks to Choquequirao includes at least three variations from 4 to 8 days. Another great trekking area is around the Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain.
