We sailed out of Nee Orleans with a 1 year old and 3 year old. The Oceaneers kids club and the nursery were under construction. My kids could not experience these areas. They did not have an open house for the kids clubs that my toddlers could go to. The food was not that great except for the breakfast and lunch buffets. We had to come back a day early due to bad weather. We were not compensated for only spending a half a day in Progreso. I would not recommend if you have small kids and if you want good quality food. I will stick with Carnival and Norwegian. The dance party was nice for my kids but other activities really didn’t cater to them. The splash pad could be better for kids who are not potty trained. This cruise is more for older kids but food sucked still.

I expected more from Disney

Beyond what I was expecting. Completely blew me away. It was our first cruise and we will definitely be coming back this is our new tradition for sure. Staff was 1000% the best. Everyone went above and beyond to cater and comfort our family made the most pleasurable experience. Dinner staff was exquisite! Christiano was a gentleman at its finest! and Sarah was a luxury in itself! Rooms were cleaned all day long shows were amazing literally made me cry! Food was beyond ! Demitri was amazing made us feel so special. Even the cleaning staff was amazing everyone remembered all of our names! It made us feel so special. Kids club was amazing also my kids loved it even my 12 year old had fun. Ratie , bo, and Alexa were great with our kids ! Thank u guys for making them feel comfortable Just go! U won’t regret it

Most magical experience

We chose Disney because it was earned through a job recognition program.  I would never chose Disney over another cruise line. I am so glad we went and experienced the Disney Magic. I still not a huge fan of Disney but Disney Cruise Line was outstanding. 

Spotless is the word of the week. Everything was Spotless and very very clean. Our room and everywhere you looked and went on the ship. Our cabin felt spacious and was very comfortable. It was wonderful to sit on the veranda and watch dolphins swim and play below. 

24 hour room service was fantastic and very prompt. Food was very good,  from room service to every meal we ate during the week. 

The service from from dinning to room service to all of the personel on the ship were outstanding. They could never do enough to make sure we had everything we needed. 

The only thing I was a bit disappointed with was a lack of adult entertainment. Most entertainment was kids oriented but that is to be expected with that crowd. The adult only area was a great way to find a quiet space.

Outstanding Disney Cruise Experience 

Our first couple cruises were on Disney and this was our first one back on Disney after trying several other lines for a few years. Disney is really good but I am still not certain they are worth the premium unless you have small children who will appreciate the characters. I have very few complaints but I miss some of the things that other cruise lines offer. 

Embarkation: This was the easiest and best Embarkation experience I have ever had. We arrived early and I was hoping we would at least have a place to sit inside while waiting for our time. There was no waiting. We walked right up to the counter to check in and minutes later we were walking on board. Fantastic.

Cabin: The cabin was pretty good, especially for a 25 year old ship. Some of the furniture is a bit worn but overall it was great. The balcony was bigger than on some other lines and I really like the dual bathroom. There was plenty of storage space and the bed was really comfortable. The TV was a bit small but that's my only issue with the room. Our room steward, Horace, was a rock star. 

Dining: I really like the rotational dining and all three dining rooms have their own neat character to them. The food was always good and there were plenty of options on the menus. The service was good. I also like that you can buy a bottle of wine and have it delivered to the next dining room the next night if you don't finish it. The pool deck food was also pretty good. Cabanas was excellent for breakfast. What I did not like about the buffet was that they have no capacity control at all, so they constantly let people in, regardless of whether there was any place to sit. Right after embarkation, the buffet was packed and there were a bunch of people standing around holding plates of food still looking for a place to sit. I don't see why they let more people in if there isn't room. My other buffet issue is that it closes after lunch. Sometimes it's nice to be able to go for dinner and avoid the fancier dining room. That isn't an option so if you don't want dining room, it's room service of pool deck food. Later at night, the only option is pizza or room service. On other ships, I like going to the buffet late and having dessert options. On the last night, even pizza was closed. 

Entertainment: Disney entertainment is top notch. The stage shows are Broadway quality. The lounge entertainers were also good. The deck parties, game shows and trivia were also very good. 

Castaway Cay: Disney's island is a destination worthy of taking a cruise for it alone. It's awesome. It's beautiful and the adult beach is excellent and is nowhere near the kids, so it really is peaceful. The food there was also very good. 

Ship: The ship looks good for a 25-year-old ship. It is small which is not at all a deal breaker for me. I generally like slightly smaller ships but this one might be a bit too small. On the Fantasy, the adult area is at the front of the ship so you don't get kids passing through. It's also bigger so there is plenty of room. On this ship, the adult area is between the front and midship elevators, so kids are constantly passing through the adult area, despite the signs saying "Adults Only". Several kids tried to go into the adult pool and some parents were clearly aggravated their kids weren't allowed in that pool. I liked the adult bar areas as well. I was surprised the number of people that brought kids into the bars to get drinks. I understand it's Disney so it seems dumb to complain about kids on board, but I think the kids should be better restricted to the family areas. 

Service: Disney service is always excellent. Everyone I interacted with was super friendly and helpful. 

Disembarkation: It was easy to get off and find my bags, but they need to make better announcements in the morning. 

We will go back to Disney, probably when we have grandchildren or maybe just to go back to Castaway Cay. They are really good, but I can almost take two cruises on other lines for the price of Disney and that is a bit hard to justify.

I had a lot of fun overall on the cruise and enjoyed the Rainforest room, spa services, character experiences, and entertainment.  My room was very clean and the service was great with the exception of special dietary needs.  I am vegetarian and gluten-free (celiac).  While the appetizer salads were fantastic, I could not get them to actually serve me a full-sized salad or vegetable meal.   I spoke to the server, pre-ordered meals, and talked to guest services and restaurant managers.  My sons and my meals were often late or absent, inedible, and despite asking for vegetables all 5 days, I never was able to get a plate of veggies.  I would not want to take another Disney cruise because for the price I expected some decent meals.  The musical shows were a big highlight and I can't say enough good things about them.  I also really had fun at Cove Cafe.

Many great aspects, but dietary needs acomodations were a big letdown

I had such an incredible time on my cruise to Castaway Cay and Cozumel. The housekeepers, servers, and bartenders on board all worked so hard and went that extra mile to make my trip something's special. Every night, dinner was absolutely on point! Palo served up the best rack of lamb I've ever had! All dining rooms had an excellent atmosphere, and I was quite impressed with how promptly food was served given the sheer number of people. 

The bars and dining rooms each had a good selection of wine to choose from. They can get a little pricey, but some of them are worth it.

For on shore excursions, I did the walking/kayaking tour at Castaway Cay. Found out the hard way kayaking is not my strong point, but the tour guides were totally understanding and helpful. Serenity Beach was very relaxing, especially since there wasn't a screaming child in sight. 

Disney knows how to do hospitality, and it showed on this cruise! This will be my go-to if I decide to cruise again.

Hospitality Done Right!

We have cruised with different cruise lines over the last 15 years. Being a daughter of a Disney fanatic I had to try a Disney cruise for our grandkids. 

Let’s start with the positives. Our favorite bar to visit was Soul Cat Lounge. Isasias the Lead bartender is excellent and all of the hosts that work with him are the nicest and most friendly people ever! They really made our trip happy even through the storms of complaints. Disney’s lower level cruise staff are EXCELLENT, they are all hard working people. I pray they are compensated accordingly. 

Disney Castaway Cay was so nice and relaxing. Disney did a great job with this island. The kids club staff was also good however, on other cruise lines their kids clubs took the children to eat and did some activities on board other than stay inside the club. Parents should be aware that you must pick up your children to feed them. The manager of the kids club also addressed an issue our daughter had with another child immediately. She was very professional and nice. 

Cons: 

The AC wasn’t working properly in our stateroom for the first two nights. Maintenance fixed it late on the second night. In an interior room with 2 adults and 2 children the AC must be blowing properly. Brent, the manager of guest relations did try to help us after we complained and was accommodating until it was fixed but we had to really cause a scene because the first manager of our stateroom floor told us we had to leave our stateroom at 10pm at night just so they could fix it and never offered another stateroom for the night. After taking my night medication, I was forced to walk around the ship until it was rectified. We ended up walking to guest relations and Brent, the guest relations manager did offer us a stateroom on the other side of the boat but by the time we got ready to transfer maintenance had fixed the issue. On the last night it broke again, woke up sweating at 4am in the morning. I called to let them know. Two of the days we returned to our staterooms to nap and walked into a strong smell of paint as they were painting on deck 4. We also were right below deck 3 and heard stomping and running over our heads until about midnight on most nights. I would not recommend this stateroom at all. 

Our stateroom host was excellent and placed an air purifier in our stateroom twice but how frustrating for us! Our stateroom host tried to accommodate as best as possible and reported all issues properly. 

If you’re used to eating food with that is seasoned do not expect it on a Disney cruise. The food was bland and subpar. I was excited to see Jerk Chicken on one of the dinner menus. Jamaica should be crying, because that was not the jerk chicken. Disney really needs to hire a new head Chef.  If you do not eat pork or beef you will struggle finding a protein source in the morning for breakfast. I wish I boarded with a case of morning Protein shakes. Relva, the food manager was great and made sure I had a fresh omelette on Day 5 (castaway day). If you don’t request fresh eggs they will use powdered eggs which I cannot eat because it gives me horrible stomach cramps. I am sure that many people think the food is great because they are used to eating that way. We walked off the ship at 715am with our luggage in hand because its not like we could sleep anyway with limited AC. 

One last thing, when booking I also noticed that Disney is just about the only cruise line that requires up front payment for any cruise you book. They don’t give the option of any deposit and payment arrangements no matter how far in advance you book. It really makes their cruises unaffordable for Middle Class Americans, unless you have a credit card with a high limit.

Not for Everyone!

We stayed concierge in a one bedroom suite. Overall I would say it wasn’t bad. For starters I have been on other cruises with Silversea and Royal Caribbean but I am not an expert and also never cruised Disney before.

Highlights: service is good everywhere. I felt you could always get a drink or food and the staff did things like hold the door for you or concierge helped me bring back drinks to the room as my hands were full. 

The room was also brand new and lovely. It had the fresh paint smell. The bath products were excellent. We were right below Cove Cafe and initially worried about noise but we barely heard any. 

Palo was delicious. We ate there four times. It had great service and fantastic food. The homemade pasta was on par with any fine Italian spot on land. 

The broadway shows were excellent. Concierge gave us free popcorn and a secret entry but the shows were never packed so I didn’t think it was that useful.

The concierge lounge was good. We loved the revamped bar and the seating area. Food selections were plentiful.

Lastly the adult pool had padded loungers. I thought that was an amazing touch.

The not so good:

Main Dining food was abysmal. I ordered halloumi cheese one night and they brought a random sweet potato puff pastry. Then another time the tuna was served raw (not rare, you couldn’t even cut it that’s how undercooked it was). At dinner the drinks never came, the experience felt rushed and the menu descriptions did not match the dishes. We opted to eat often at Palo to avoid the bad food in the main dining room. I was really disappointed with Disney on this.

Embarkation was chaotic. The Puerto Rico terminal was not set up for crowds and I had to argue with staff to show I was concierge even though I clearly had a concierge stateroom. 

There are no port talks. There are no educational lectures. There is no casino. There are a zillion character meet and greets and you can attend a dozen different alcohol tasting classes but that’s the extent. 

Overall I’d go again but on another Disney ship and I’d go concierge only. I would compare prices though because for $13,000 you can probably cruise on Celebrity or Silverseas in a suite and get a lot better food.

Not bad but not great

The crew are amazing. Let me get that out of the way. They appear to work at least 12 hour days and went to great lengths to help us on our stay. They are the redeeming factor of this whole experience.

First off, the price for this cruise was insane compared to other cruises. That made sense due to the IP and the Disney experiences you wouldn't get on another cruise. I wish when we were booking someone would have told us that this wasn't for our kids. Most activities and excursions require a child to be at least 3 which is fair enough. They neglect to tell you how many amenities require them to be completely potty trained. My youngest (1.75 yo) was unable to go in any of the pools except for a dinky splash pad that even he wasn't into. They specifically told us that even if they're wearing a swim diaper they can't go in. A few other parents at the pool when we were there also didn't know about this beforehand and were likewise pretty pissed. The daycare for kids 3+ also requires complete potty training.

Our party had two joining rooms. Between the four televisions we had, about one of them worked consistently with the remote. And when they did work they took a significant amount of time to work. As in click the button, wait 30 seconds to 2 minutes and it might finally respond. Absolutely infuriating when it takes ten minutes to put something on when you know what you want to watch and where it is on the menu that should have taken less than a minute.

We normally sleep with the house set to 72 F. The room was so warm that each night I would sweat through the blanket and the sheets. I would wake up in the middle of the night and legitimately have to towel myself off before laying a towel over the soaking wet sheets. I read this is due to others leaving their verandah open, forcing the system to pump more heat than it needs. What made it worse was that we have a dial in our room that apparently does absolutely nothing. My wife kept asking if I had it as cold as it would go and I had to show her that yes, this is in fact the coldest it gets.

The shopping on board the ship was lacking. The Disney stores that Disney recently closed were 100x better than these dinky shops. The selection was limited, unimpressive, and ultimately overpriced. There was a store that exclusively sold princess outfits. I had two boys with me who would have loved to dress up as little princes or Flynn Rider or Beast or whoever, but they had nothing like that except for the Bibbidy Bobbidy Boutique, which you need an appointment for.

Finally, the food was terrible except for the fine dining restaurant Palo. The food at Palo was phenomenal. The food at Cabanas (the buffet) was pretty good especially for lunch. But the main restaurants you go to for dinner were just underwhelming. The first night we sat at 5:45 PM and the food took well over an hour to arrive. We didn't get out of there until damn near 8 PM when the next seating would arrive. The food was as bland as humanly possible. The vegetables were basically boiled. There were people in my party who never season anything and they put salt on their food. I damn near fainted it was so out of character for them, but they were right. 

The wi-fi costs an arm and a leg and it is frequently completely unavailable. Numerous times I would be in bed, struggling to sleep and the internet would basically tell me sorry bro. For the amount of money they charge for wi-fi I expect it to at least work all the time even if it sucks. And to be clear, it consistently felt like sucking data through a straw.

However, my kids had the time of their life. During the character experiences my youngest was literally shaking with excitement when he got a picture with Captain America, Spiderman, and Rapunzel. In a few years when the youngest is potty trained I will consider doing this again just for their sake.

Just empty your pockets on the way in and don't expect anything in return

We chose this cruise because I experienced a Disney cruise as a teenager and had a great time, so I thought my 4 yr old would enjoy it. It turns out he is not really into Disney movies or characters, and that was about 25-35% of the onboard activities (meeting characters). The kids clubs for the under 10 crowd were also crowded and did not have a great kid to counselor ratio (I think the teen and tweens might have more fun and organized activities to keep them entertained). We had to tender at 1 port at the process was AWFUL. It took us about 1 hour to get from the back of the line onto the pier itself, and Disney had advised to allow 45 minutes so we are glad we allowed 1.5 hrs. Also the 'table' at the pier was confusing- we were told to meet our excursion at the pier, but you have to check in at a table and get a sticker and then go meet your excursion. The process was not difficult but it wasnt the seamless, well-communicated experience you'd expect for the price you pay for a Disney cruise. 

The positives: The food at dinner was actually quite good. Cabanas was pretty average but there were often some really tasty options (like roasted sweet potatoes or there was an Indian day that was quite good). 

My verdict is that I would not do this again unless my son or the friends we travelled with asked to do another group cruise - we had about 3 days of fun on a 6 day cruise so it was painful to pay for the extra 3 days of 'meh'. The crew were excellent but overall the onboard activities were limited for us, having a shy kid who was nervous at the kids' club. Our alternatives with him were the crowded pools or movies and shows. They also have crafts and games onboard but those are better for older kids who can hold scissors or follow directions. So for the younger - I'd say under 6 crowd- the characters are the big draw.
