Long Time Celebrity Cruiser Really Disappointed

We got on board on Feb 19th 2024

Upside:

-Very nice staff and room attendants.

-Buffet and restaurants served great food

-Lots of activities, shows, Jazz music and acrobatics were prepared for guests.

-Nice gym, swimming pools and jogging track.

Downside:

-Cayman island got canceled, early morning Captain Kate informed passengers it was due to weather and wind which the weather was calm, later in the afternoon we were advised the cancellation was due to Cayman receiving two other ships which had gotten there earlier.Many passengers were not convinced and we missed the opportunity to visit the island.Many people assumed as most passengers were too old they preferred not to run the risk of tendering them.

-Despite there was a time limit for jacuzzis, people occupied them for long time without letting other people to benefit from them, also most of the pool lounge beds get occupied by people putting their towels on them from 6am to 6pm making it hard to find a spot, some people put their stuff on them without even using them just to make sure no one else will take them.

-Water closets buttons and motion sensors are inconvenient as they get blocked by the toilet cap.

-All artists and musicians professionals, except one cello player lady who several times in different performances got off the tune.

As a whole it’s a nice cruise ship and I recommend it.

Room 8183 Review 

We booked this cruise when we were on the Apex cruising Ireland and Iceland in 2022. We wanted to experience an E-class ship on a warm weather itinerary. Just my husband and I looking for a warm getaway from a winter in the Northeast. Of course, the last 2-3 winters have been pretty mild. We got a great deal on an Aqua Sky Suite with $1500 on board credit and used the last of our pandemic future cruise credit. Had been to Grand Cayman and Jamaica, so only planned to explore Cartagena, Aruba and Curaçao. Travel from PHL to FLL the day prior to the cruise was horrendous—7-8 hours delayed, but it was due to weather conditions in FLL of all places, so really can’t complain. Embassy Suites has seen better days, so poor choice of pre-cruise hotel on my part. Thankfully we were there much less than 12 hours. 

Ubered to Terminal 25 and embarkation was immediate at 11:00 though we weren’t scheduled until 12:00. We were on board within minutes. I love dropping bags in the room, picking up our key cards and heading to our muster station, having watched the safety video at breakfast. We went straight to the Retreat Lounge and had the concierge (2 of them, short line at 11:30) book our specialty dining reservations (we had 3 night package), getting the times/dates we wanted. So much for all my stress when I thought we had missed the opportunity by purchasing the package and not being able to book in advance. We met our “Head Butler” (designated Butlers don’t return to Sky suites on Beyond until 13 March) who was very nice and arranged for our daily coffee delivery in the morning. We saw him 2 or 3 times in the hallway during the cruise, but asked nothing further from him. Our stateroom Host, Jay (short for Jayrald) did it all. Poor man was so overworked, but very accommodating of any of our requests (distilled water, blanket instead of duvet, extra hangers, swapping sparkling wine for Chardonnay, corkscrew and two bags of laundry). We’re really not high maintenance, though. 

The Aqua Sky Suite was lovely, close to Forward elevators, bed facing ocean, large balcony with 2 fairly comfortable chairs and a small table that came in handy with our one room service breakfast. We liked the mirror/window in the bathroom, but mostly kept them closed and used the mirror more than the window. I loved the vanity area to get ready in the bathroom. Did not like the step in tub/shower so much but the multiple shower head options were good.  

Luminae was a much better layout than on the Apex, as well as the Retreat Lounge. Spent more time in both of those this cruise. Service, as always, was great and we like the menu/food for the most part. The Retreat Lounge was a nice place to relax when we needed to give our host time to make up our room in the morning. The concierges even had some books (left behind by other passengers I assume) you could borrow. 

We enjoyed several productions shows and headliners in the Theater and in the The Club (not as good a venue), but you did have to get there a bit in advance for good seats; Retreat only had reserved seats on Evening Chic Nights, which was a bit of a waste if you ask me. We only went to Eden to eat dinner one night since it was at the Aft of the ship and less convenient for us. 

We did book 3 excursions through Celebrity for Aruba, Curaçao and Jamaica. I remembered on Aruba why I don’t like excursions on a large bus. Although we did enjoy the excursion in Curaçao, it was limited by the capacity of the boat (with underwater viewing deck), so that limited the group size. We decided not to go at the last minute in Jamaica—we booked with OBC, so were not concerned about getting a refund. 

We enjoyed all of the Specialty Dining: Le Voyage (tasting menu), Eden, Prime Cut, Le Bistro and Raw on Five. We used OBC for all, but would think twice about the prices if not. We actually ended the cruise with $4.95 credit left, so didn’t spend a penny over our price for the cruise. Met the infamous Capt Kate (enjoyed her daily updates but I do not follow her on social media so was not starstruck like many others) and Shawna was our cruise director again as she was also on the Apex in 2022. No complaints about the activities or activities staff other than I never seemed to be able to win at trivia, lol. Embarkation was also very quick and easy. We taxied to FLL and were there by 8:30 for at 12:00 flight (no delays this time). 

Now for the negatives….this cruise felt like it was the most crowded I have ever experienced on a Celebrity ship, regardless of M-class, S-class or E-class, Retreat, Aqua or Concierge. I wanted to try out the Sunset Bar, but it was always jam-packed, regardless of time of day.  Sun Loungers on the pool deck, Retreat Sun deck and the Solarium were always occupied or “reserved” every time we passed by. I even heard one cruise passenger absolutely berating a poor crew member in the solarium about someone having the audacity to remove her belongings, i.e. enforcing the rules about chair hogging. The sense of entitlement I observed on the part of passengers on this sailing was heads and shoulders above any I have seen on a previous sailing. I actually blame Celebrity for this because of course, you are enabling that sense of entitlement when you charge premium prices and keep increasing the number of passengers in the “privileged” areas of the ship.

My husband and I are not sun-worshippers and I do not do well in heat/humidity for the most part. I think our Caribbean itineraries are behind us now. There are a few islands we have not been to, so if I find a cruise that hits them all, that will likely be our last one. We have other travel destinations to check off our bucket list. We are unlikely to book a suite again when traveling on E-class, and only on the other classes if the price is right. Celebrity has been the best balance of quality food, service, entertainment and itineraries for us so far so I don’t think we’ll jump to another Ocean cruise line, but we won’t hesitate if the itinerary is right. For now, this is the first time in 9 years we don’t have another Celebrity cruise booked, but we do have 3 cruises coming up on American Cruise Lines (River and Coastal) in 2024/2025. Who knows what 2026 will bring!

Celebrity Beyond in the Southern Caribbean

We have not been on a cruise in about 9 years. This was my 10th cruise overall.

Amazing ship, modern, cozy, beautiful, interesting and elegant. Much nicer than I expected. A noticeable step up from any ship I have sailed on. 

Crew was very friendly, helpful and for the most part attentive. Did not see any obvious staff shortages except in one dining room.

Food was good, not amazing and sometimes awful. As to be expected in a banquet type service things like pasta, scrambled eggs are not good. Baked goods and desserts were fresh and fantastic. Indian food at the buffet was also consistently good. Some items that are on the menu every night like coquilles st Jacques they really fail at. 

Food temps were all over the place but generally not hot at the buffet or the dining rooms. Even on the same plate one item would be ice cold while the others were sort of warm. 

The buffet always seemed to be busy and congested. More so than on other cruises I have done. There is a lot of seating so you could always find a seat if you wandered around enough. 

Main dining rooms we only waited 5-15 mins for a table. Service was good and timely in all but the Cyprus dining room. They seemed understaffed. The sommelier was running around to all the tables and service took two hours for one dinner. The other 3 dining rooms ran very efficiently. 

Our inside cabin was huge and the king size bed was super comfortable. Shower was large and instant hot water. Sink has no hot water no matter what you did so I washed my hands in the shower. 

Tough to find deck chairs on sea days. A LOT of chair saving all day and people never used the chairs. I noticed people saving chairs in both the solarium and on deck and switching back and forth. Fortunately there were several semi hidden deck spots you could always find a chair at. I did hear a lot of complaining randomly about the deck chair saving. 

We did not go to any shows or participate in many activities. The one beyond the podium talk my wife went to was not as described. They had a decent amount of activities so if you like to be busy there should be no issues. 

I don’t drink but we did have a drinks package. Bars had a good choice of mocktails and cocktails lots of interesting drinks. The cafe had some great teas you brew at your table and then pour over ice. It is served in a really cool double pitcher. Worth checking out for the experience.

Food is my main priority on a cruise so that is why I cannot give this 5 stars. Other than that everything else was a 5.

Great staff and beautiful ship

Sitting in airport now reflecting on my 11 day cruise on the Beyond with my wife. Overall the experience was extremely positive. The ship was state of the art and beautiful. Our indoor stateroom was larger than average and our stateroom attendant Wayne was freindly and exceptional. We enjoyed all of the food and never had a bad meal. We had breakfast in the dining room every breakfast and dinner and some lunches because we don't like the craziness of the buffets. All of the servers and meals we had were fantastic. Every morning for breakfast you had a giant tray of danishes/muffins and juice come up to you with water and coffee filled up usually within the first minute of being seated. At dinner 3 different dips/butter and a variety of bread, The service and food was fantastic. The buffet had a wide variety of food and snacks that was above and beyond what was needed when we ate lunch there. We also ate specialty dinning $ lunch at the grand bistro french restaurant the first day to avoid buffet a specialty dinner at Eden where the food, service and experience was some of the best I have experienced in my entire life. I participated in many events including a flash mob, a football throwing contest,  long drive golfing, deal or no deal and many other game shows, trivia and activities. The activitiy team was fabulous, cruise director Shawna was fun and filled with energy, working with Gill and Sabina on my first flash mob will be something I will always remember. Also Mark, Marc and Ozzy were fantastic. We had the funnest time at the 80's party and the silent disco DJ battle. We enjoyed the wine glass hot tubs and pool and there was quite a bit of seating on the upper deck for everyone. Towels were readily available everywhere around the pool area. The ship was very clean. The shows were all good to fantastic but on second day we showed up for the 7pm elements show at 6:55 and could not get any seats so we said no big deal and decided to come back for the 9pm show at 8:40 only to find the theater even more packed and we left very disappointed not to be able to see that show. We learned our lesson and showed up extra early for every show after that. I was able to see the Elements show on my stateroom television in the following days and it looked and sounded like the greatest show ever. 

Most of my complaints on the ship are directed at my fellow passengers which is not Celebrity's fault and you run into these jerks on every cruise. People going to shows were constantly coughing or sick near us ( ever heard of a cough drop). Rude people in scooters nearly running us over. People jumping in the elevator out of turn. People saving prime pools seats by clipping towels early in the morning, Celebrity did try and crack down on this somewhat by leaving small notes saying -(It's just a chair share) on some of the perpetrators,  I loved this but these people have no conscious so I doubt it had much affect. Rude people ordering food and drink without using any please and thank yous as if they rule the world, was quite appalling. Overall it was an excellent memorable cruise and we met many nice people. This particular cruise had a very old demographic which made us feel young at 45. There was also no kids on this boat which was nice. We got to explore 5 new ports and already have an Iceland cruise booked for 2025 that we are looking forward too.

11 day Panama canal cruise.( Full review) 45M.

We were a group of nine from the Atlanta GA area.  

First the great.

The food generally was outstanding in the main dinning room ( Mediterranean).  The service in all areas was also great. A shout out to Neno our head server. The ship was spotless in every regard.  Captain Kate was a joy, seemed to be everywhere.  The ship itself is a thing of beauty.

The good.

The ship is too big for our taste. Have been on Summit and Equnox and prefer them.  The infinite balcony was just ok for us.  Made cabin bigger but missed outdoor feel and ability to open divide between balconies.  No problem with much discussed noise. More than enough storage and bed comfortable. Took two ship excursions.  One in Cartagena ( because of perceived safety issues) and Panama Canal because of no availability of other options.  We generally use private tours and the ones we booked in the ABCs were great!  

Finally the Bad

On our ship excursion in Cartagena it was hot.  Pace of tour was very fast. One of our group (85 yr male) got overheated and dehydrated. Part his fault for not knowing to take it easy some Celebrity fault for not realizing he and two others in our group were also struggling.  Guide from another group did intervene ant led the three of them back to air conditioned bus.  The real problem happened on return to ship.  Went to medical center where he got IV fluids and antibiotics ( why antibiotics).  Blood work showed liver levels off. He was forced to leave ship in Colon along with his wife and daughter. Celebrity claimed liver results could indicate hepatitis ( which is contagious) The chance of a 85 yr old contracting hepatitis between a complete physical two weeks before cruise and third day of cruise are very small.  Would not even allow them to wait till Aruba to depart.  Celebrity inflexible position in this case was beyond reasonable. 

To sum up.  It was a nice cruise for two thirds of us.  The ship is beautiful and clean,service, and food were very good.  Miss real balcony and from now on will sail smaller ships stick to Summit class (one Viking Ocean cruise and loved it).  Mostly great, some good, and one really bad experience.

The Great, Good, and Really Bad

8th cruise on Celebrity, first time on an Edge Class ship.  We always book a Sky Suite so we have access to Luminae and Michaels Club.  On Edge Class ships, that is now a separate area called "The Retreat".  

The ship is beautiful, our suite was wonderful, and the room attendant was excellent.  But some things left a bad taste in our mouth.  The whole Retreat concept just doesn't seem as special or as exclusive as it does on Millennium or Solstice Class ships.  There's just too many people in the Lounge and especially in Luminae - very busy, not calm, certainly not like on the other classes of Celebrity ships.  The dinner menu in Luminae is limited, and sometimes there was nothing we cared to eat.  But because Luminae is at the opposite end of the ship from the main dining rooms or Blu, we could not select from their menus - the distance to bring the food from those kitchens was too far.  On Millennium and Solstice class ships, you can order off any of those menus, because their kitchens are all close together.    

You must pay the upcharge for a glass of wine over $17.  Most, not all, of their wines are over $17.  Then there is a gratuity - not just on the additional cost, but on the entire glass of wine.  So, if you got a glass of wine that was $20, you were charged not just $3.60 (the $3 difference, plus 20% gratuity on the $3 ($.60) - but rather $7 - the extra $3, plus 20% gratuity on the total price ($20 x 20%).  Retreat customers are paying at least twice the price of someone traveling in Aqua Class, and triple or more what people are paying in regular cabins.  Why the nickel and diming of your best paying customers?

Sometimes at dinner, there was a line of people waiting for to get an empty table in Luminae.  That means one thing - too many people in too small of a dining room.  Again - I would expect this to happen in one of the main dining rooms, but is this the experience you want for your best paying customers?  I know people who were in non-Retreat cabins, but were traveling with friends or family who were in Retreat cabins.  They can "buy in" for $30 and eat in Luminae.  Well, if the restaurant is already congested, why let more people in?  Answer:  For the money.  Detract from the whole experience to make a few bucks.  If I wanted to stand in line and wait for a table to open up, I could have booked a regular cabin and eaten in one of the main dining rooms. 

Gratuities are no longer included in their "All Included" package.  For guests who book The Retreat with All Included pricing, the cut is even deeper. Not only have the gratuities been removed but so has the per person onboard credit, which ranged from $200 to $400 per person. Instead, The Retreat guests will now get only a premium Wi-Fi package and a Premium drink package. 

For all passengers, onboard gratuities will be charged separately.  So, we're all paying more and getting less.  Hmmmm.

We still enjoyed the cruise, but Retreat is just not as good as it used to be.  Everything changes over the years.  This is another example.  

Accountants have taken over the company - the new CEO was previously their CFO.  Numbers people are running the show - not service oriented people.  The difference is showing.

The decline of the Celebrity Brand

Excitedly booked the Beyond after sailing Apex & living it.  We are vets of 30+ sailings on various lines but Celebrity our favorite.  This review is written semi-chronologically and from the heart.

Embarkation took longer than usual and Security and Celebrity personnel grumpier than usual.

Our cabin was ready when we got to it and we met our steward who kept our cabin nicely clean.  The decor was stylish, the bathroom with shower and hand wand spacious.  Downside was there was no place to hang drying bath towels — seems that towel racks have been sacrificed to the decor (form over function).  There is little storage space.  Hint:  I brought metal hangers which attach to the metal walls which can be used to hang towels and other things like bags, hats, jackets etc

It is a Deluxe Porthole Balcony with a huge window open on the top & balcony doors which can be closed.  It was sold to us as unobstructed but was not, there were very uncomfortable chairs and there is a water hazard (pictures attached).  One day, DH was in the open balcony doorway and sprayed in face with water — apparently the window washing without notice.  The housekeeper apologized and washed my pedal pushers by hand and the steward cleaned up.  But later the hatch opened in the blue metal platform just at low edge of our window and a man came out and was sweeping water around creating a mist that stopped my balcony rest.  Kind of startling - I thought I’d be alone LOL.  There was another day when we had to quickly run to close the door to prevent a soaking.  Not nice, Celebrity.

The food in the Oceanview was mostly very good but there was a lot of coughing and passengers’ unsanitary behavior.  I should have stayed out totally but was tempted by the great variety of food.  Next time I will skip the buffet.

The Main Dining room menus and food were a huge disappointment — except service which was pleasant and efficient and the decor.  We showed up mostly early and the waits were short.  

Example:  I love short ribs but they were served in several restaurants in several incarnations sometimes on the same nights. There were not 4 different restaurants with different menus.  Most items were the same.  The classics which were added back recently included chicken breast — one of the toughest flavorless unappetizing dinners.

Happy to see the onion soup, shrimp cocktail, escargot, apple pie a la mode though.

Food was mostly cool.  However, Celebrity managed to have warm and cool on the same plate such as when the microwave doesn’t heat evenly.  This was denied by the Maitre D.

Liked the food and attitude at Cosmopolitan best, and most disappointing goes to Tuscan.  One night I ordered a carbonara dish which was good so tried another pasta another night on this 10-day.  It had chicken that seemed torn apart and was cold in spots and warm in others.  The pasta was dry.  I sent it back for another variety and was the same poorly done.  The Maitre D promised a special pasta for us next night but the sous chef produced hard, dry spaghetti.  I would have suggested a little pasta water and/or more olive oil.  Yes, I’m a little fussy but on Apex I didn’t have to send food back.  There was the most delicious short ribs over pappardelle.  By the way, portions varied.  Mine seemed ok but dh received 2 small pieces of beef one night more like a child sized portion.  I’ll spare the reader more examples.

Room service was good for Continental breakfast and one evening for dinner.  Not too many choices but arrived on time with phone call alert.

Spa cafe is very good.  I just wish passengers would find another place for their card games and computer use because there aren’t enough tables.

We had dinner in Eden one night — excellent food and service and ambiance.  I loved watching the chefs.

Ok, now for the elephant in the room,  no, in my head.  The Chairhog situation is just the worst I’ve ever seen.  We, and others, would wander the ship not only near the pool but other decks, solarium inside and out, rooftop garden, every available chair, loveseat, lounge was taken and not by bodies but by towels, possessions like in that beautiful garden area couches piled with flip flops, a book 1/2 on one lounge, 1/2 on the other.  People laying down across couches where 2-3 people could sit — very frustrating.  Despite speaking to guest services who they suggested would enforce their policy of 30 minutes only we could not find anyone to help and nothing got better.  We tried to sit in Cafe Al Bacio a wonderful coffee/pastry shop but the game in the atrium with cruise director was so loud.  We tried to relax on the balcony but (see above).  This is not a relaxing cruise vacation if you cannot sit down outside.  On Apex we had a Sunset Veranda but there were none available.  

Entertainment was mixed.  We saw Stage Door which was great - such talented singers and dancers.  The comedian was funny and the illusionist Tom Simmons excellent.  But the combos in the atrium were not good at all.  The electric cello player from Venezuela was very good as was the guitar player/singer duo.  The pool music was loud and terrible.  Several of the events I wanted to attend were started 10 - 10:30 pm such as the deck parties and silent disco. So I missed out.

Elite coffeehouse breakfast still nice — love the cappuccino and smoothies but didn’t like the reception when I arrived for coffee only with 10 minutes to spare.  The happy hour in The Club offered no officers or any other welcoming Celebrity Captains Club personnel.  On evening there was to be Captain Kate but the line outside stretched to the cafe and The Club is a small venue. 

Get to theater early to get a good seat - there is theater chair reserving there also.  The cruise director was not my cup of tea.  She yells and sounds like she is talking to a bunch of children.

The non-smoking casino was a fun draw for us but received several emails and notifications of free drinks while playing and were only offered drinks 2 times.  This is in several visits over 10 days.

Antigua visit cancelled because of wind.  St Martin excursion was just ok and Nevis was good but not the nicest beach at the end.

We really miss the Sky Lounge for the comfy lounges and front sea views.  We miss the lounging with sea views all over the ship.  The pre-Edge class ships were classy without the retreat class taking valuable public space.  The monetizing of cabanas also stole from public seating space  But the lack of commitment to enforcing Celebrity's own policy of holding the chair for 30 minutes shows a lack of caring about the passenger’s experience onboard.  We miss the many regular balcony cabins in that midline price range.  We miss a varied menu and at least close to hot food.  We miss a responsive guest services staff.  They were pleasant but sounded like a form letter.

Beyond disappointed

We booked this cruise while on our previous Celebrity cruise (Edge) in January 2023.

Many Retreat perks have been eliminated over the past year. 

1. No butler. We were never welcomed by a butler. The housekeeper introduced herself but that was the extent. We never received necessary information regarding changes in Retreat policies upon embarkation. 

2. Poor communications overall. See comm ER 1. 

3. Inadequate staffing at Luminae and Normandie restaurants. We were offered a buzzer while we waited at Luminae!!!! No excuse for such poor service.

4. No reserved seats at majority of theater shows. Retreat guests are only privy to this perk now on formal nights. The shows were typically packed. We were not able to find a single seat the best show on a casual night. I sought assistance from guest services…duh, it was like talking to one of the sculptures.

5. Another eliminated perk of Retreat was unlimited use the mini bar fridge. Unfortunately, we weren’t informed until we saw the bill 4 hours before the ship reached Fort Lauderdale upon debarkation. 

The Retreat Conceirge’s response to our concern and request that the $99 be refunded was cold. 

6. The Retreat pool area lacked adequate chairs to accommodate all its guests. It was a real pain to find, and hold on to a chair—-in the Retreat!

This well may qualify as a violation of contract that we entered into on January 2023. 

Heartbreaking. I used to adore my time on Celebrity ships. 

The Retreat : Disappointed. No longer a treat! 

Our last 9 cruises were with Celebrity.   The last 3 were on the Edge and Apex.  We were looking forward to another enjoyable cruise.  So disappointed.   The ship was packed as were the public areas.  Difficult to find seating.  The chair hogs on the outside decks were in full force.  Watched one couple actually had their "stuff" on 3 different areas!!  So glad we had a sunset veranda which allowed us to avoid the decks.  We had 6pm reservations at the different main dining groups.  When our group of 5 arrived at the first dinner venue, we were told it did not apply and told to go to a different restaurant and to be there every evening at 5:30pm.

Celebrity not what it used to be

We chose this cruise on the Beyond mostly because of the itinerary, along with the fact that the Beyond is a newer ship. 

 We were not disappointed.   We loved our cabin.  It was on the 11th floor, concierge class, and had lots of room to store all of our clothes and other things.  Our steward, Ari, was great.  He always had a smile for us and a wonderful attitude.  Our favorite bar was the World Class Bar.  Bartenders Konstantyn and Daniil were fabulous.  We were totally entertained just watching them make the fantastic drinks each time we went there.  The drinks were not just poured and served.  Each one was crafted with care, and really special. My favorite was the Rose Water.  We also liked the Martini Bar, with bartenders juggling bottles and usually a band playing.  Great place to "people watch".

   No matter where we ate, we thought the food was really good.  We ate dinner at all four of the main restaurants, with Normandie being our favorite and Tuscan being our least favorite.  We had breakfast each day at the Oceanview Cafe, as well as some lunches.  Finally, we had dinner at 3 of the specialty restaurants - Fine Cut Steakhouse, Rooftop Garden Grill, and Eden Restaurant.  Probably our least favorite was Rooftop Garden Grill, but all 3 were very good.    I suggest that you make reservations at all of these, including the four main restaurants, as soon as you can so you can get a time suited to you.  

   We watched a couple of football games on the big screen at the Rooftop Garden, and we took advantage of stretching classes a couple of mornings.  Jill, who led the class, was great.  

   We went on excursions at the ports, some booked through Celebrity and some not.  I will concede that the ones booked through Celebrity were handled well, with the meeting point easy to find.  We had 2 that were not Celebrity tours, mainly because by the time I booked them, the ones I wanted were full.  The meeting point for one was confusing and the tour itself was a little disappointing. Next time, I'll try to be more proactive in booking excursions through Celebrity.

   We will definitely be looking at cruising on the Beyond on our next cruise.  We loved it.
