Our first Viking river cruise was not typical (fortunately) since strikes in France which caused the lock and dam system inoperable on part of our voyage. From our Paris pre-trip we took a fast train to Lyon where we were supposed to board the riverboat. Instead, we were bussed to Avignon, several hours away. We docked in Avignon most of the time, but did manage to get some river experience en-route to Arles and back. Viking did a great job of making the best of a rotten situation and we enjoyed the available aspects of the cruise. They refunded the unused days of Silver Spirits package and gave us credit on a future Viking cruise of 35% of the price of our Buri cabin. Viking and its staff were very understanding and professional, despite our disappointment in not actually experiencing a river cruise and only getting 5 days/nights on the boat.
Cabin was spacious and our cabin steward was phenomenal! We especially enjoyed the lights along the floor in the bathroom to help us navigate in the middle of the night. Ingenious!
Ship dock spot was a Great base for a walking tour of Arles. We did our own tour of places / scenes where Van Gogh painted. We had to go to the Tourist Info place to get a brochure (small fee) or we could have just used a phone app.
We spent most of our time in the Avignon port since the lock & dam was closed above Avignon and below Lyon preventing us from most of our scheduled spots. Our dock was right by the Pope's Palace and an easy walk across the street to the entrance to the gated medieval city. We enjoyed our own independent exploration of the old town and our Viking guided tour of the Pope's Palace.
