This is a Carnival-developed port. The shops are rip-offs and sell only cheap Chinese wares. I don't think my party was able to find anything made by locals. We've been to Amber Cove two other times and we loved it....... however...... our 1,400 passenger ship was there with the 5,350 passenger - Carnival Celebration. Amber Cove can possibly handle 3,000 guests - but - it's infrastructure was completely overwhelmed when 7,000 people docked there! We went on a beach excursion while at Amber Cove to avoid the water park scene at the cruise port. It was a nice adventure that took us by bus through Porta Plata. The ride provided us with interesting sight of the region and the people of The Dominican Republic. The beach we visited was at a resort and was very picturesque. Not a lot to do at this stop. We did the waterfalls and water slide tour. Turns out it’s a cliff jumping tour and you can jump instead of slide! Unless you’re cursing carnival…. So that was lame. Cool sights on the excursion though. The guys didn’t give me change when I bought a souvenir so that happened. They just kept the money and left.
