About Running on Waves Cruises

Running on Waves operates one head-turning vessel of the same name; a three-masted tall ship built in the style of a classic tea clipper.

The 42-passenger ship marks the realisation of the seafaring dream of Russian businessman Ruben Khokhryakov, who comes from an engineering background and set out of build a modern-day vessel to recapture the golden age of sail.

A collaboration between shipyards in Russia, Poland and Germany, with interior designers from Russia, Germany and Greece, the construction process took more than five years. Running on Waves was launched in 2011 and offers seven-night around Greece and other countries in the Mediterranean.

The company has offices in Russia and Cyprus, where Running on Water is moored and refurbished during winter months.

The ship attracts passengers with a sense of adventure that want to experience the thrill of tall ship sailing in comfort. Expect to meet a multi-national crowd from European countries, the U.S., Canada, Australia and more. With some cabins sleeping up to three, the line also caters for families with older children.

Do I have to dress up on a Running on Waves cruise?

There is no set dress code and the onboard atmosphere is relaxed and informal. Casual and sporty clothes are suitable for the daytime, both on the ship and ashore, with a sweater or light jacket for cooler evenings. Take comfortable footwear with non-slip soles for walking around on deck, preferably with a covered back and closed front. Flip-flops are not allowed. In the evening think along the lines of clothes for a stylish onshore resort. There are no formal nights.

Is everything free on Running on Waves cruises?

Not quite. Fares include all meals, snacks, 24-hour coffee station, onboard talks and demonstrations, a selection of watersports and Wi-Fi. Excursions, some watersports equipment, bar drinks, massage treatments, laundry and discretionary tips are not included.

When the ship is in ports of call -- many of them inaccessible to larger vessels -- optional excursions provide a really authentic flavour of local life and places of interest. Swimming, snorkelling, diving and other activities are also on offer from the watersports platform.  Back onboard passengers can relax on the Sun Deck and spot marine life from the observation area and daily activities include climbing the mast, knot tying, star gazing and other maritime pursuits, coupled with talks, yoga and exercise sessions, cookery demonstrations, and Greek dancing and language classes.

Far Exceeded My Expectations!

I have previously cruised only on larger, six-star cruise ships (Crystal Cruises) so I was hesitant about being on such a small cruise, and worried it wouldn't be as luxurious of an experience as I was used to.The boat leaves port quite late each night, and we found after a dinner, and wine, we enjoyed just sitting on the top deck with a glass of wine, talking, watching the stars, and feeling the sea air.Read More
